Paying for Santiago Metro and buses: bip! card or contactless bank card?

When Pago Ágil works in Santiago, why the same card or device matters, and when a bip! card preserves an integrated bus fare.

A bip! card and a contactless bank card may look interchangeable at a Santiago Metro gate, but they do not work across the same parts of the transport network.

The short answer: use an eligible contactless Visa or Mastercard if every leg is on Metro de Santiago or Tren Nos–Estación Central. Buy and load a bip! card if a RED bus forms part of the journey. Pago Ágil is not yet accepted on RED buses, so a bank card cannot provide an integrated Metro–bus fare.

Your journey Practical choice between these two options
Metro only Contactless Visa/Mastercard or bip!
Metro plus Tren Nos–Estación Central Contactless Visa/Mastercard works; use exactly the same card or device throughout
Any journey involving a RED bus bip! card
Student or older-person reduced fare The relevant concession card, not a bank card

Where contactless bank cards work

Pago Ágil accepts enabled contactless Visa and Mastercard debit, credit and prepaid cards at validators on Metro de Santiago and Tren Nos–Estación Central. Physical cards and supported NFC wallets can be used without registering or loading transport credit first. It is currently an adult-fare option only and is not accepted on RED buses, according to the official Pago Ágil guide.

Both Chilean and foreign cards are within the scheme’s terms, provided they are contactless and the issuer has enabled them for the service. Acceptance is not guaranteed for every card. Pago Ágil says all Visa cards are enabled, while Mastercard users should check whether their issuer is supported. Mastercard says debit and prepaid issuers are joining gradually, and Maestro cards—Chilean or international—are excluded. The Pago Ágil terms also warn that an issuer may apply its own currency-conversion charges.

For a visitor, that means a foreign Visa or eligible Mastercard can remove the need to buy a bip! card for a rail-only stay. Keep another payment option available in case the issuer declines the validation.

The same card and the same device are not the same credential

To retain the integrated fare when changing between Metro and Tren Nos, tap the same payment credential on every rail leg:

  • Started with a physical card? Continue with that physical card.
  • Started with Apple Pay, Google Pay or another enabled wallet? Continue with the same wallet on the same phone or watch.
  • Do not tap the plastic card for one leg and its wallet version for the next.
  • Do not switch between a phone and a watch, even if both contain the same underlying card.

The system treats the physical card and each digital device as different credentials. Metro gives the same advice in its bank-card payment instructions, while the formal terms require the same device and wallet for integrated travel.

Pago Ágil charges the same adult transport fare as bip! and adds no transport surcharge. It groups the day’s journeys into a later charge labelled “Red Movilidad Santiago”; Mastercard may first show a temporary CLP$700 pre-authorisation. Your card issuer’s own foreign-transaction or conversion fees can still apply.

Why bip! still matters for a bus connection

A contactless bank card cannot currently validate a RED bus fare. More importantly, its fare integration covers only Metro and Tren Nos—not a bus before or after the train.

A loaded bip! card works across buses, Metro and Tren Nos. Under the current integrated-fare rules, it permits up to two transfers within 120 minutes of the first validation, subject to the same-direction rule and no repeat of the same bus route. The official Santiago fare table lists these adult fares, effective 22 February 2026:

  • Bus: CLP$795 at all times.
  • Metro or Tren Nos, low period: CLP$735; an eligible transfer to a bus brings the total to CLP$795.
  • Metro or Tren Nos, off-peak: CLP$815; an eligible bus transfer adds nothing.
  • Metro or Tren Nos, peak: CLP$895; an eligible bus transfer adds nothing.

If you tap a bank card at Metro and then use bip! on a RED bus, those are two separate payment systems. The bus validator cannot recognize the rail payment, so the Metro–bus combination does not receive integrated-fare treatment.

A normal bearer bip! card costs CLP$1,550 before adding travel credit. It is sold at Metro ticket offices, Centros bip! and authorized retailers; the minimum ticket-office load is CLP$750, according to the DTPM’s bip! card page.

A simple way to choose

Check the route before paying for the first leg:

  • Staying around Metro-served areas such as central Santiago, Lastarria or Providencia, with no planned buses? An eligible bank card may be all you need.
  • Connecting between Metro and Tren Nos at Estación Central? Pago Ágil works, but keep using the same physical card or the same device and wallet.
  • Taking a RED bus as part of a combined journey? Start and continue with bip! so the system can calculate the integrated fare.

Do not mix bank-card, wallet and bip! taps within a journey and expect them to be joined afterward. Payment rules and fares can change, so recheck the official Pago Ágil and DTPM fare pages shortly before travel.
